Book of Hajj
- Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam and is a fardh
obligation according to both Qur'an and sahih Hadith.
- It and 'Umrah are obligatory once in a lifetime (difference of opinion
about 'Umrah)
- The five conditions for its obligation are:
- Islam
- Sound mind
- Adulthood (defined as puberty in
Islam)
- Freedom
- Ability
- They are valid if performed by a child, but do not fulfill the lifetime
requirement.
- If the blocking condition is removed in time to stand at Arafat, then
the Hajj fulfills the lifetime obligation.
- LIkewise for 'Umrah as long as it is before the Tawwaaf.
- Ability means one who possesses appropriate provisions and means of
transportation. (Or it is more general than that.)
- Whoever possesses the mean is required to begin immediately striving to
get to the Hajj and it is a sin to postpone it with no valid excuse.
- If physically unable, one should seek another man or woman to do it on
his behalf. (According to some, this is only for parents.)
- If someone dies who was obligated to make Hajj without making it, the
proxy should be provided for from his estate.
- No one who has not made their own Hajj can make it for another.
- In addition to the five conditions in the case of a woman it is also a
condition that she find a husband or other mahram to accompany her.
- Also, part of her "ability" is that she can suffice his expenses, if
necessary.
- If she makes Hajj without a mahram, she commits a sin, but the
Hajj is valid.
- If the mahram dies on the way, she can continue with her Hajj.
